of them ignited by overhead utility power lines and aerial communication facilities near power lines downed by powerful Santa Ana winds. We used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmm.ucar.edu\/models\/wrf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)<\/a> Model, a mesoscale numerical weather prediction system designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting, inputting a decade of hourly, 2km gridded weather data for all of California.<\/p><p>From this enormous dataset, SIG scientists extracted the worst two percent of fire weather conditions for each grid cell. We then performed 1000 unique, high resolution wildfire simulations per cell using SIG\u2019s GridFire wildfire behavior model, based on fuels and vegetation data input from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landfire.gov\/data\/lf_stream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LANDFIRE 1.3<\/a> dataset. Ultimately we simulated over 100 million ignition events around the state of California under historical extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26ed710 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"26ed710\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">New Maps Help Planners Understand Fire Risk<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3dfd2e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3dfd2e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe aggregated the results to create numerous fire risk distribution maps based on urban development, fuels, vegetation, topography, weather and existing electrical infrastructure. \n\nThese maps are helping planners understand where the greatest fire risk is found in California.
